Learn Items via Online Workshops

Uma conducts 2/3-day Online workshops periodically where participants can learn Bharata Natyam items.

  • Items are typically taught over 2 sessions of 1.5 hour duration each.
  • You will be given audio that you can use for performing this item.

Individual guidance and corrections will be provided. This is open to anyone who has at least a basic exposure to Bharata Natyam.

Past Workshops

Pushpanjali – June 06 2020

This is the first workshop as part of Nrtya Kalpanaa Series. This is a pushpanjali in Raagamalika and talamalika. This has a nritta sequence followed by a Ganesha sloka. This is followed by a verses on Lord Murugan. It is about 6 minutes in duration.

Pushpanjali – June 14 2020

This is the second workshop as part of Nrtya Kalpanaa Series. In this workshop, we will learn a Sri Rama Stuthi in Raagam Kapi and Talam Adi, composed by Vannamaamalai Jiyar Swami. This is about 7 minutes long. This is an Abhinaya oriented Bharata Natyam item in praise of Lord Rama. It explores Bhakti rasa through various episodes from the epic, Ramayana. Audio and video will be provided as part of the course.

Nataraja Stuthi - July 24, 25, 26 - 2020

This is the third workshop as part of Nrtya Kalpanaa Series. The item begins with the Chidambareshwara Stotram followed by a Jathi. The lyrics of the kriti is from the point of view of a devotee praising the Lord Nataraja of Chidambaram. It is a piece describing the Thandava Dance of Lord Shiva. The concept of Ardhanareeshwara and Navarasa are also explored in this.
